We as a people constantly change and so should “the rules.” I believe there should be no rules to fashion. Trends and styles are quite subjective though taste and an editing eye is essential. The great success of fashion is the ability to self express. There are no limits to who we can become and/or celebrate through our clothing. Why limit and bound ourselves to rules?
I stopped living and breathing by the words of fashion critics, directors, and editors years ago. I grew confidence in my likes and dislikes as well as my ability to filter expert advice.
One of my favorite fashion rules to break is matching complimentary colors. Unconventional pairings are so foreign to the eye that it just works! Black and brown is unique to me because each color is often used as a foundational color. We either match our outfits with black tones or brown tones. Black better suits warmer colors while brown better suits cool colors. Bringing black and brown together creates a juxtaposition that my eye loves!
The other fashion rule I proudly break is wearing white, or its variants, after Labor Day. Once I realized how good white looked against my skin I refused to limit its wear to five months! I love a white coat in the winter and my go to Fall outerwear piece is this cream faux shearling vest. It keeps me warm yet allows me to show off my outfit. A win/win!
Down with the rules! Tying an ensemble together is more important than following rules. I wanted to emphasize the brown belt so I paired it with brown booties. In this way, the accessory don’t appear to be accidental or an afterthought.
Breaking the rules created this subtly eye-catching ensemble that is perfect for the cooling temperatures.
