Seasonal Refresh

Unconventional Places #1

If you follow me on Instagram, you’d know that a few posts ago I mentioned how I felt like I was forcing the process of styling an outfit and writing a blog post. Summer fashion isn’t particularly inspiring to me and I felt both under and overwhelmed.

During my week-long hiatus, I spent the time to reflect on what wasn’t working for me and how I’d like to represent myself and my brand.

I realized that I was creating this event around blogging. I needed the perfect outfit, surrounding, lighting, make-up, etc. Why wait for seemingly perfect circumstances? Fashion is an everyday circumstance.

My style doesn’t revolve around photo opportunities. Whether I happen to be at the laundry mat or at Barnes and Noble, my style still exists. I should celebrate that more and take you all along with me as my style “travels” to various places!

This seasonal refresh is not only about the shift in fashion but the shift in my mindset. In more ways than one, I need to remember to rule my environment and not allow my environment to rule me.

Hopefully, this awakened perspective will open up my creative mind and unleash more relaxed and visually intriguing shots.

I was inspired to shoot at the laundry mat because, quite frankly, I was drying clothes there. The lace-up sleeve detail required an everyday background with an underground vibe. The seedy lighting and large machines complemented the simple nature of this outfit. At times, I feel engulfed by outdoor spaces and feel as though there is a lack of intimacy in the produced photos. I appreciated intimate nature of not only the building but a laundry mat in general.

Shooting in front of records spoke to me because I listen to music every day. As an artist myself, I often hold a deep connection to the enriched souls of musical artists. FKA Twigs is the epitome of an artist. I became a fan because she is innovative, unique, and so supremely herself. When I share her music with friends not everyone “gets” her but I do. She is an acquired taste. I feel similarly about myself. I’ve often lost people’s engagement in the storm of my creative mind, but for those who get that do. She is a refreshing reminder to press on and honor me in all of my endeavors.

Why wait for seemingly perfect circumstances? Fashion is an everyday circumstance. this speak volumes love. That’s why it doesnt matter where you are because even if you’re just going to the laundromat you dress up the way you please. I struggle with confidence but I found that even if Im just picking up groceries, if Im wearing something I feel confident in, I feel empowered 🙂 Thank you for blessing us with your genuine passion for fashion..

I love this!! Unconventional photos are the most authentic and the most memorable. It’s so refreshing to see unique shots in a sea of monotonous photos.

I love this especially for the simple fact that fashion is pretty much any thing you put on and letting your true show reflect that. Great post

    • Sydney Nichelle September 20, 2017 at 2:17 am

      Exactly! Thank you for reading!

YASSS girl that is so true. I love that you’re taking this mindset, and I am going to spread the word to all those fashion bloggers I see on instagram. The season of the perfect fashion photo for your blog is OVER. I’m tired of my instagram looking like a fashion magazine. I want my instagram to go back to looking like my friends and regular people doing mundane regular things. And sometimes they look really cute doing them, ok fine. But enough with every one of someone’s photos being posed with them leaning against a cool wall!

    • Sydney Nichelle September 21, 2017 at 12:42 pm

Yes! I’m glad you see the vision!

I totally agree with this post. I was under the impression that blogging needed to be celebrity-status pictures and perfect outfits, but then I realized that’s not true. If you do it because you love it, you should post whatever makes you happy!! Can’t wait to follow along 🙂 XO

It’s hard NOT to feel that way, but you’re right! I feel much more relaxed and pleased with my photos when I take photos in the style that I like 🙂
